Vanessa tensed when Kirk came in for lunch not long after she returned from the paddock, but she needn’t have worried that anything had changed between them. He was business as usual, his face back to being remote. And for that she was thankful. She was having a hard enough time coming to terms with wanting Kirk so soon after her husband’s death. She dared not risk letting these feelings of attraction for Kirk go any further.

The rest of the day was uneventful. Josh took a longer nap than usual in the afternoon. It had been a big day for him, what with all the fussing by his grandparents, then going to see the horses. She let him stay up and eat dinner with them, but he’d been mischievously naughty all through it, not that she minded. She was glad her little boy had a playful streak in him.

However, she did mind when she’d put him down in his crib for the second time and he started to cry again. He’d been perfectly fine when she’d picked him up and taken him out to the kitchen and he had wanted to play.

“Okay, young man,” Vanessa said firmly. “Sleep.”

His crying became louder.

“No, I’m not going to pick you up again.” She tucked him in with the sheet, gave him his teddy bear and left the room, determined to let him cry himself to sleep. Sometimes that was all a parent could do.

Ten minutes later she was in the kitchen finishing the cleaning up and he was still crying. She’d peeped a look into his room once and seen he was okay, but now the sound was getting to her. He was tired and upset and she was getting tired and upset, too.

“Is he okay?” Kirk said from behind her in the doorway.

She swung around from wiping the sink down. “Yes, he’ll be all right in a minute.”

“He’s been crying for some time now.”

She bit her lip. “I’m sorry if he’s bothering you.” She quickly dropped the cloth. “I’ll go and—”

“He’s not bothering me. I’m concerned that he’s in pain.”

His concern warmed her. “I looked in on him a short while ago and he was okay. He’s got a clean diaper and he’s not hungry. He’s just overtired.” She wiped her hands on a towel then headed for the door where Kirk was standing. “But I’ll go see to him.”

“Bring him into the living room and we’ll watch some television.”

“Oh, but—”

“It might help him to settle.”

“I have a television in my room. We can watch it in there like I always do.”

His forehead creased as she came up close, but instead of stepping back and letting her pass he curled his fingers around her arm, stopping her. “Is that why you stay in your room each night? You think I don’t want you using the television in the living room?”

She’d thought it safer to stay in her own room. That way she’d be in no danger of anything happening between them. “I’m perfectly happy with that.
